Farm the city
FARM:London

FARM: have recently raised R&D funding towards their prototype rooftop urban farm. This is the first step towards realising our plan to build a 3000 square metre farm on a London rooftop. The farm will grow over 200 tonnes of vegetables, fish and mushrooms with no food miles and zero waste.

Food will be grown using FARM:'s unique approach which integrates aquaponic fish farming and hydroponics, poultry and mushroom growing in a high yield environmentally friendly system.

Farmshop, London

Our first and most well known project has been operating as a farm, cafe and research hub since 2011. It broke even in its first year and now employs four people - proof that urban farming can be sustainable. It has been widely praised for it's contribution to the urban farming movement and was named in the New York TImes 2012 Design Honors List.
Though modest in scale it is home to London's first and largest aquaponics system, an indoor hydroponic food lab, micro-mushroom farm and chicken coops. We are inspired by the people who visit every day and it remains the source of our belief that people and farming belong together.
The Farmshop is also the FARM: headquarters.

Recent Projects

Urban farming health outcomes

Picture
We have recently concluded a six month study with the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) and Centre for Better Health into the role of urban indoor farming in mental health rehabilitation. FARM: built and managed a small grow system in a warehouse and worked with people undergoing mental health therapy to care for plants.

The results of the study were promising with participants improving their confidence, wellbeing and sociability. This has encouraged us to explore the role of care farming and rehabiliation in urban farming.

Vertical mini farm for Tech City, London Olympics

We designed, built and managed a vertical farm module for Number 10's Tech City Headquarters at the Olympic Games. The wall has only a 3 square metre footprint and grows Thai basil and exotic herbs for sale in London restaurants. The system was moved to FARM:shop Dalston after the Games.

Aeroponic and LED Root Farm, South Korea

Picture
The team built an aeroponic farming installation in Gwangju Korea. The system used horticultural lighting  and misters to grow crops rapidly. This artistic project may have opened new avenues for the farming of plant roots in the future.

Mushroom farming on a housing estate

FARM: are working with Islington Council and the Finsbury Park Estate to build a 300kg per week exotic mushroom farm and training centre in Central London. The farm will provide work and training opportunities to estate residents and grow mushrooms for retail in shops and restaurants.

We have secured an option on our basement site and are currently exploring private equity funding opportunities.

Vertical farm business plan and feasibility study for the Manchester International Festival

Picture
The Manchester International Festival appointed FARM: to advise on their plans for Alpha Farm a £0.8m 7 storey vertical farm in Manchester. Our business plan and recommendations led to a more suitable site being chosen and the project streamlined. The new farm, which is run by the brilliant Ecospheric Foundation, will open in summer 2013.
